What are the differences and similarities between the Hindu and Buddhist traditions?

Also what factors facilitated Buddhism’s spread to China and Southeast Asia while Hinduism remained predominately in India? Could you please explain your answer and support your position using specific examples?

Buddhism is a philosophical system that come from Hinduism.
Since it is a philosophy free from cultural trappings, it could easily be exported. When Buddhism settled in a new land it absorbed the local cultural flavors. This can be seen in the different styles of Buddhism taking on symbols, spirits and rites of passage from the land they were in. As such Chinese Buddhism and Sri Lankan Buddhism have different ceremonies and celebrations and yet both still follow the same basic Buddhist philosophy.
Where as Hinduism is tied to the daily practices of its follows, as such it is more of a way of life than a religion. Since Hinduism does not seek out converts it only spread by migration. While Buddhism was spread by word of mouth. Converted merchants took Buddhism to the land they traded with and spread the knowledge of the Buddha to foreign shores.
